In this review, the author analyzes the main ideas of the monograph written by Russian scholar N.I. Krasniakov about the problems of state building and management of the Russian Empire’s Western territories. The author shows how the current problems in the relations between the Russian Federation and former Soviet republics, and the relations between the Federal Center and the subjects of the Russian Federation are connected with the state’s imperial past. The article describes the autocracy’s main approaches to form the political and legal space as well as the model of interaction between the Imperial power and national regions.
