Abstract
The article is devoted to substantiating the thesis on the necessity to return the social sciences to the study of the sacred. The article emphasizes the special significance of value issues for contemporary Russia: the socio-political appeal to traditional values requires adequate academic support. The author analyses the pernicious attitudes of social research that make it difficult for sociology to address value and religious issues: secularist and positivist discourse. The fundamental studies of R. Otto and E. Durkheim provide constructive examples of studying the sacred in the social sciences. The paper proposes equilibrium between qualitative and quantitative research on religion.
